Начинался МГТУ с ремесленного училища, идея организации которого вызревала очень медленно. В 1826 году вдовствующая императрица Мария Фёдоровна «высочайше повелеть соизволила учредить большие мастерские разных ремесел» для мальчиков-сирот Воспитательного дома. С этой целью известным московским архитектором Д.И. Жилярди был отстроен сгоревший еще в 1812 году Слободской дворец в Немецкой слободе. Здание приобрело современный вид в стиле позднего московского ампира. В центральной части оно украшено скульптором И.П. Витали многофигурной композицией «Минерва», символизирующей достижения науки и практические навыки ремесленника.
В 1830 году император Николай I утвердил «Положение о Ремесленном учебном заведении». С этого года и ведёт своё летоисчисление нынешний МГТУ.
В 1868 году был утвержден Устав, в первом параграфе которого было сказано: «Императорское московское техническое училище есть высшее специальное учебное заведение, имеющее главной целью образовывать механиков-строителей, инженеров-механиков и инженеров-технологов». Первыми кафедрами в училище были кафедры высшей математики, общей и прикладной физики, построения машин, строительного искусства, технологии волокнистых веществ, общей химии, химической технологии.
В XIX веке технические науки и в целом высшее техническое образование переживали процесс становления, что не могло не отразиться на формировании учебного процесса в училище. В значительной мере все зависело от людей, которые работали в его стенах. Профессорами и преподавателями ИМТУ являлись такие выдающиеся учёные, как Д.И. Менделеев, Н.Е. Жуковский, П.Л. Чебышёв, С.А. Чаплыгин, А.С. Ершов, Д.К. Советкин, Ф.М. Дмитриев, А.В. Летников, А.П. Гавриленко.
Высокий авторитет профессорско-преподавательского состава и уровень подготовки выдвинули ИМТУ
